We are proud to celebrate the completion of our new mural on Friday, April 25, 2025 at 4:30 p.m. in front of the parking lot entrance behind Walgreens (4116 18th Street between Castro & Collingwood streets). We will also host a check distribution ceremony for the $5,000 donation that the district is making for this year’s Dyke March.  Senator Scott Wiener and President of the SF Board of Supervisors Rafael Mandelman will give brief remarks at the event.

The new mural is named “Living Lesbian Legends” by Tanya Wischerath. The Castro LGBTQ Cultural District commissioned the artwork and covered expenses of more than $13,500 for the mural to be painted. Tanya’s new mural is based on the painting series she did for the district last year.

On March 20, 2025, the Castro LGBTQ Cultural District Advisory Board unanimously approved a $5,000 donation to the Dyke March because of its cultural significance to San Francisco queer and trans people. Uniting lesbians and queer women in a rally and march celebrates queer joy. The district makes this donation to hopefully inspire community members and philanthropic institutions to give to the Dyke March.

Stop by and meet the artist and people in the mural! The living lesbian legends being celebrated are Lenore Chinn, Leigh Crow, Jeanette Gandionco Lazam, Jewelle Gomez, Marga Gomez, Olga Talamante, Ruth Villaseñor, and Franco Stevens. The district will have sweatshirts and tote bags that commemorate the artwork by Tanya Wischerath at the celebration.

“I love this mural,” shared Tina Aguirre, Cultural District Director.  “It increases representation of queer women in the Castro, including women of color and Two-Spirit individuals, who are often overlooked in the neighborhood. And it’s beautiful!”
